Pay For The Experience

by wasim on January 19, 2010

CappuccinoI popped into town today with my wife and without really giving it a second thought we had just contributed a small amount of profit towards someone elses business because of wanting to fulfill our own needs. It was a very small contribution though. We paid for an experience and that was to sit in a warm place while drinking a warm cup of Cappuccino without making it ourselves and even have it brought to us. Ok let me rephrase that. We went into Muffin Break for a Cappuccino, that’s it !

I just never really took the time to think of it as a business transaction but that’s exactly what it is and we are all doing this on a daily basis. Obvious really but ……

Here is what I really payed for

  • A warm welcome
  • Being allowed to sit down in the warmth.
  • Not having to make it myself.
  • The drink to be brought to me.
  • A lovely smile, a thank you and wishing me a good day and telling me I am welcome any time, all as I was leaving.

You could say it was well worth the £2 and those things are supposed to come with the service anyway but imagine if those things listed above were not included. Would I have payed £2 for no welcome as I arrive, a rude person to serve me, not being allowed to sit down, make the drink myself and no farewell on my way out? I might have paid but I would have probably left without a feeling of wanting to go back at all.

So what was the point of this article? Well it occurred to me that I need to be writing my blog posts with the same concept in mind by fulfilling the needs of my readers except that it’s slightly different for blogs as you have to be willing to write and not always expect something in return.

What do you think? Should I be expecting something in return for my posts? The reason why I ask that is because I believe that if you get something in return it is because what you provided was actually worth something and what you get in return is deserved.

By the way the cappuccino was lovely and so was the service, well worth the amount of metal I exchanged for it so I’ll probably go back there. That might have something to with the loyalty card though.
