Yesterday my whole day was totally unrelated to blogging. I did actually switch the laptop on to read up a little more on blogging tips and it was one of those days where I just strayed off the subject and began to browse the internet. I typed in ‘blogging tips’ into Youtube but before the video had loaded I spotted another video on the side listings and then clicked on that, watched about half a minute of it before losing interest. I carried on like this for quite a while before realising what I was doing was pointless. I was surfing the internet aimlessly. I’m not encouraging you to browse the internet aimlessly too but something did get me thinking.
Discovery
While in my full flow of aimless browsing I came across a few videos that really did seem pointless but when I looked at the number of hits these videos had recieved it was mind blowing. One perfect example of what I am talking about is Fred. If you go to Youtube and type in ‘Fred’ you’ll see a young guy acting crazy in all his videos. The footage looks like it has been slightly speeded up and his voice has a high pitch tone. Some people hate it while others think it is hilarious. The only benefit I can think of is that it brings a little laughter into peoples lives which is I suppose is something we need. What I discovered is that, although these type of videos seem pointless, they are not aimlesslessy uploaded. Out of all the millions of people who watch the videos I wander how much click on the link to his website which is in his profile. On his website he has his video collection together with merchandise based on his internet character and has even been featured on the childrens tv program iCarly. So what he has managed to do is brand his name in quite a creative way.
So I started asking myself whether a project even needs to have a point it to work? In other words does anything have to be of any benefit or value to anyone for it to work? Well common sense should tell us, ‘Yes of course otherwise it would be pointless.’ I hear so much people saying ,‘create something of value’ and then people will want more. What if something really is pointless but then starts attracting attention? Does it start mattering? I wander what Fred was thinking when he made his first video of his high pitch voice and speeded up movie. Was he really thinking, ‘Great. Millions of people will watch my video and then I can create my own merchandise and start earning money trough my own Fred brand’ ? Or was it just a bit of pointless fun at first?
Is This A Key Area?
If an idea works it begins to matter. It will not matter to everyone though and maybe this is quite a key area. My aim should be to make, whatever I do, matter even to a small audience and not worry about trying to make it matter to everyone because statistically that is not going to happen anyway. Just look at how there are millions of people on Facebook but compare this to the number of people on this planet and guess what? Most people are not on Facebook because to most people it does not matter……… but it works !
I realised that being too concearned about whether people care about what I write or blog about is infact quite pointless because most people will not care anyway. Do you get what I mean ?
