Step Out Of Your Article

by wasim on January 22, 2010

Step out of your articleIt is possible, and a good thing, to read what you have written by stepping out of your own written article. In other words become an outsider looking in and read it as if it is someone else’s blog and you’re visiting it for the first time. This is something I was not doing before.

Actually I’m quite disappointed with myself for not applying this simple concept to my blog posts earlier considering that was one of the fundamental skills of creating a fresh piece of work that I was taught in university. Anyway we live and learn and from now on every one of my posts will be carefully thought through. If there are errors in my earlier posts I’m going to make it a point not to go back and correct them so I am able to track my progress.

Good Post Bad Post

Do you ever write a blog post and think it is brilliant only to come back to it later only to find that it wasn’t very good after all? I’ve done that so many times. I started thinking about why it would sound different at a later stage compared to what it sounded like while I wrote it. I came to the conclusion that it is a bit like being caught up in the moment. Sometimes the excitement of something at a specific moment in our lives can be very deceiving. I suppose that’s why people say, ’snap out of it’ oh … that’s what I should have called this article. Oh well.

So if walking away from your article helps why not do it? I now write an article and before publishing it I step away from it and have a break. I then come back to read it a little later and if it still sounds good then I go ahead and publish it. If not then it goes straight into the trash bin rather than begin to fiddle around with it because that’s when the fun ends and it starts feeling like a chore.

Do you know how to step out of your own article? If so, how? I’d love to know how you guys do it too.
